It’s a hard pill to swallow, a heavy burden to bear…but sometimes we have to go it alone.

Whatever it is, we usually feel better knowing someone has our backs – a marriage, a break-up, a new job, a retirement, a birth, a death. It feels better when we have someone in our corner.

How many times have you found your second wind once you saw your backup? Maybe you were down for the count, but then you saw hope around the bend and you suddenly found the strength, the will, and the fire to pull through and push on.

The truth is we all come to these points at different times in our lives; where we have to go it alone. For whatever reason, there is no team, no calvary, no backup. What are we to do when there is no one else, when we are it, and we still have to get it done? What happens when there is one?

When you are alone that is the perfect time to go within. To quote the Dali Llama, “If you do not go within you will go without.”

This not only means that you will go without the things you seek, but it also means you will always be searching outside yourself for answers.

When there is only one, when you are it, take the opportunity to go within, to reflect, to investigate, to refine and confirm. Take time out to become acquainted (or reacquainted) with yourself, with your wants – your hopes and dreams.

When you have no one else to count on, don’t count yourself out. Know that you are enough. You alone have what it takes to get the job done. You are a force to be reckoned with…but you’ll never know it unless you take the time to get to know yourself; your strengths and weaknesses, what revs you up and what brings you down.

When there is just you, know that you are connected to something far greater than this world and can handle anything this small space might throw at you. And when there is one, know that you are not farther from your goal but closer to your light…because it only takes one to change the world.
